They serve as a good reference to locate actin and myosin proteins in the samples and act as a positive control for gel analysis. The actin & myosin standard contains two common muscle proteins that have already been isolated. Why do SDS-coated proteins move when placed in an electric field? Since SDS has denatured proteins to negatively charge, the proteins move, based on their size, from the negative end (cathode) to positive end (anode).
